The people living with HIV Stigma Index
Minimize

Introduction

In 2008 the Global Network for People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+), the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW), the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and UNAIDS presented ‘The People living with HIV Stigma Index’. The Index aims to build the evidence base for understanding stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with HIV in different countries.

The index creates a great opportunity for the HIV in Europe initiative to gather data within countries and facilitate comparisons between countries.

Objectives

HIV in Europe’s stigma index project builds on this work and will roll out the stigma index in 3-5 countries in the European region.

Presentation of results

HIV in Europe supports the implementation of the stigma index in Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Moldova and Turkey. The roll out in the countries will be finalised by the end of 2010. Country reports will become available here.

Third of HIV diagnoses in UK still occurring late

A third of new HIV diagnoses in the UK in 2008 were made so late that the individuals had a significant risk of developing an AIDS-defining illness, new figures from the Health Protection Agency show.
